The University of New Haven - For the Experience

At UNH, undergraduate students complete a core curriculum of liberal, humanistic courses as well as specialized majors

NEW HAVEN, CT

The University of New Haven offers outstanding degree programs relevant to today’s career market. Faculty are chosen for their interest in teaching and their concern for students and advisees, as well as for their considerable academic and professional accomplishments. At UNH, the student body is diverse, the scheduling is flexible, and each individual is challenged to grow and to become a productive and innovative member of society.

Founded in 1920, UNH is a private university offering approximately 70 undergraduate and 27 graduate degree programs in such areas of study as accounting, biology, business administration, computer science, communications, criminal justice, dental hygiene, English, engineering, environmental science, fire science, forensic science, history, hotel and restaurant management, mathematics, marketing, music and sound recording, and tourism.

Located on an 80-acre hilltop in West Haven overlooking downtown New Haven, Connecticut and Long Island Sound, the university is large enough to provide the diversity required in today’s world and small enough to individualize programs and services in a friendly atmosphere conducive to learning.

At UNH, undergraduate students complete a core curriculum of liberal, humanistic courses as well as specialized majors designed to prepare them for productive careers. Classroom preparation may be supplemented by cooperative education assignments, internships, and field study to arm students with the hands-on experience potential employers seek.

UNH points with pride to its distinguished full-time faculty, more than 80 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their field. They are joined by adjunct professors who, in addition to academic degrees, bring professional expertise to the classroom.

Included among the major facilities on campus are a newly renovated 400,000-volume-capacity library, a state-of-the-art computer center, contemporary and newly renovated classroom and office buildings, and eight residence halls. A recent addition to campus is the Learning Center for Finance and Technology; the technologically advanced features of this state-of-the-art hands-on trading floor simulation rival those found on professional trading floors. A new Recreation Center is scheduled to open on campus in 2007.

The Center for Learning Resources, Health Services, the Counseling Center, and the Residential Life, Multicultural Affairs, and International Student Services offices are all staffed by professionals available to students on a regular basis. The Career Services Center boasts a wide variety of resources and an excellent placement record.

Active day, evening, and graduate student government coordinates more than fifty clubs and social activities at UNH. Campus media include WNHU (a radio station which broadcasts in stereo year-round on both FM radio and online), a weekly student newspaper, and a yearbook.

UNH is an NCAA Division II member institution and its athletic teams have gained national recognition in numerous playoff competitions.

Sports programs for women at UNH are a vital part of the university’s athletic program. The women’s volleyball team has made twelve straight trips to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and has reached the Elite Eight nine times, while the women’s basketball team won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987 and the NYCAC Conference Championship in 2006.

UNH stands apart from other institutions of higher learning because it invests in the process of experiential learning - bringing practice into the classroom to educate its students. The faculty of UNH have an enthusiasm for teaching that includes giving their own lectures, bringing students into their research labs, and looking for ways to support the students outside the classroom.

For this generation of college students and the next, the university’s commitment to experiential learning reflects the powerful mutual relationship that UNH cultivates with its students, alumni, and the community, assuring success on campus, in the workplace, and in life.
