Officially known as the Post 9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2008, the newest GI Bill significantly increases the education benefits available to departing military veterans. The Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) applies to men and women who have served in the military a minimum of 90 days after September 11, 2001. Those who serve a minimum of three years on active duty since 9/11/01 are eligible for four years of tuition costs equal to their state’s highest public university tuition plus a monthly housing stipend, yearly expense for books and other benefits. For more information, visit www.GIBill.va.gov.
The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, also known simply as Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. This program is designed to help veterans afford tuition at any college or university whose cost exceeds those of public colleges. The provision allows colleges to enter into an agreement with the Department of Veterans Affairs to help fund the cost of tuition that exceeds the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. Colleges may contribute up to fifty percent of the additional expenses beyond what is offered by the GI Bill. The Department of Veterans Affairs will match that same amount. For more information, visit www.GIBill.va.gov.
How to Reach these Veterans
Upon separation from active duty, veterans are required to attend mandatory counseling through their education and transition office several months prior to discharge. Transition officers use Veterans Education Guideas part of a structured program to assist departing servicemen and women in making the move from the military to civilian life.
Approximately 300,000 veterans will be departing the military within the next twelve months with tuition benefits available from the New G.I. Bill. These young men and women are a highly sought after candidate pool for postsecondary education. They possess the qualities every school looks for in recruiting a new class. They are mature, motivated and will have financial resources available like never before.
More than 1,800 colleges and schools are qualified to receive direct disbursements from the Veterans Administration. As a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges, your school will directly benefit from the new tuition assistance programs available. Further, if your school is a Yellow Ribbon Program participant, students may be eligible to attend classes and complete their undergraduate degree at no cost.
You can reach these veterans as they make their decision about postsecondary education by advertising in Veterans Education Guide. Sponsors benefit from all of the following: - Display advertisement (several options)
- Response postcard pre-addressed to your admissions office
- Expanded profile of your school including course offerings and programs of study plus a special message to veterans to let them know they are welcome on your campus.
