Special Features: Iona College has positioned itself as a leader among Catholic colleges and universities in the New York metropolitan region and utilizes the resources of New York City in both its academic programs and student cultural activities. Students participate in New York City-based internships and enjoy the City’s museums, galleries, theaters, sporting events, and people-watching.
In recent years, the College has undergone an aggressive building campaign. Iona added a new student union, athletics center and a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion of its main library. As a technology leader among the nation’s colleges and universities, Iona was among the first to install a completely wireless campus network almost a decade ago and has been the first to install dual-boot Macintosh computers in its public computing labs. Iona remains listed as one of the Intel Corporation’s “50 most unwired campuses.”
Iona’s core curriculum has recently been revised to reflect a more global and interdisciplinary approach and to prepare students with the skills required for both major programs of study and competition in the global marketplace. Iona’s academic programs have received national accreditation in areas as diverse as Education, Computer Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Business, Psychology and Social Work.
Iona is among the few New York State colleges in having this broad range of accredited programs. Almost 70 percent of our undergraduates in all academic majors are encouraged to participate in credit-bearing internships. Many students select to study abroad in Ireland, Italy, France and other locations, including the Black Friars program at Oxford.
Iona compels and supports its students to excel in all areas of the College life as is demonstrated by our competitive Division I athletics programs (our men’s Cross Country Team placed second in the nation in 2008-09), our students’ independent research (Iona’s science students currently work with NASA in performing research on the atmosphere of Mars), and our academic competition teams (Iona’s “Fed Challenge” and “Mock Trial” teams have consistently placed ahead of national Ivy League teams). Iona has 21 Division I teams and participates in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
After Iona, our graduates continue to excel: 76 percent of our graduates go on to pursue graduate or professional studies and gain acceptance at the world’s most prestigious graduate schools (Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Oxford, University of Chicago). Iona alumni also excel in the workplace, currently heading global industries as chairman, president, or CEO (New York Stock Exchange, NASDQ, American Express, Terex, AFL-CIO) and provide our students with a network of internship opportunities and our graduates with employment opportunities. |
