Ramapo College of New Jersey’s innovative one-day decision plan to accept high-school seniors and to offer scholarship awards signals a continuing trend by the northern New Jersey state college to seek out and attract high achieving students. Located at the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains in suburban Mahwah, this liberal arts college, ranked number one by U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” 2007 Edition among northern public comprehensive colleges, is being recommended more and more as a “first choice” by high-school counselors.

Applying to college is often a process that causes confusion and stress for students and their families. Seniors spend what should be their best year of high school, first selecting what they hope are the right schools to apply to, and then worrying about whether or not they will be accepted.

Fourteen years ago, Ramapo introduced the highly successful Immediate Decision Day, an admissions approach that “demystifies” college selection and eliminates the anxiety of waiting for an acceptance or denial letter.

Students and parents may spend months biting their nails and watching the mailbox for the fat or thin letter from the admissions office that determines their fate for the next four years.

Applicants make an appointment with the Admissions Office, visit Ramapo on an Immediate Decision Day and receive an answer that same day as to whether they’re accepted and even whether they might qualify for an achievement scholarship.

Ramapo’s Immediate Decision Day enables the applicant to shorten that process considerably. Applicants will experience directly what academic life at Ramapo is like and the Admissions Office will have a chance to make a better determination of whether the student’s academic credentials and interests are appropriately matched to the College.

This is the way “The Day” works: An applicant must make an appointment to attend one of the Immediate Decision Days, scheduled during August, September, October, November, and December. On the appointed day, applicants must bring with them a completed Ramapo College application (unless they have submitted one online prior), accompanied by SAT scores and a high-school transcript. Applicants and their parents will spend the day at the college, tour the campus, attend seminars taught by faculty, eat lunch in the dining hall, meet administrators, and talk with Ramapo students. Each applicant will be interviewed by a member of the staff during which time a determination will be made if Ramapo is the right place for that student. At the end of the day the applicant will be informed of the College’s decision. If the student has not been accepted, there will be an opportunity to discuss the reasons and explore alternatives. The decision to accept the student is binding on the part of the College but students still have until May 1st, the common reply date, to send a deposit.

This is really geared for high-achieving students with a record of school and community activities. Ramapo expects students to be in the top 20 percent of their class with combined SAT scores of at least 1120 in critical reading and math (no less than 500 on any portion of the test) and an academic grade point average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. Students who don’t meet those criteria should apply through the regular application process since additional information may be necessary to complete their application.

The Immediate Decision Day at Ramapo College of New Jersey is a major step in accelerating and simplifying the application process. Seniors may obtain applications from their high-school counselors, by contacting Ramapo directly, or logging onto the Ramapo Web site www.ramapo.edu.
