UNDERSTANDING ADMISSION DECISION OPTIONS

Share |
<< Back

You've done the research, narrowed your selection to those schools that truly interest you, completed the necessary admission and financial aid forms and sent them in by the deadline date. Now comes the hard part - waiting for a response - a process completely out of your control. Or is it?

Many schools offer special admission decision options with varying response times. Before considering any of these options, however, the student must understand the special policies, deadlines and obligations involved. This article will briefly describe some of the admission decision options available to incoming freshmen.

Early Decision refers to the application process in which a commitment is made by the student to the institution, that, if accepted, the student will enroll. Only a student who can make a deliberate and well-reasoned first choice decision should apply under an Early Decision plan because the institution will require a nonrefundable deposit well before May 1.

The student may apply to other colleges but may have only one Early Decision application pending at any time. Any student applying for aid will adhere to institutional Early Decision aid application deadlines, and if admitted, the student will enroll unless aid award is inadequate. Immediately upon acceptance of offer, the student will withdraw all other applications and make no subsequent applications.

Early Action is the term used to describe the application process which permits a student to make application to an institution of preference and receive a decision during the senior year, well in advance of the normal response dates in the spring. The candidate is not committed to enroll at that particular institution.

The student may apply to other colleges. Any student applying for aid will adhere to institutional aid application deadlines. A commitment prior to May 1 is not required but is encouraged as soon as a final college choice is made.

Regular Decision refers to the application process in which an institution reviews most of its applications prior to notifying the majority of its candidates.

The student may apply to other colleges, but is encouraged to make a commitment as soon as a final college choice is made.

Rolling Admission is a term used to describe the application process in which an institution reviews applications as they are received and offers decisions to students as applications are reviewed.

The institution may have a stated or recommended application deadline and will notify candidates of decisions within a reasonable and clearly stated period of time after completion of the application. The student may apply to other colleges but is encouraged to make a commitment as soon as a final college choice is made.
