The United States Coast Guard really makes a difference. It is Unique among military services in that its mission calls for the performance of important and meaningful jobs of a humanitarian nature. While other services prepare for their ultimate missions of defending our country, the Coast Guard actually performs its missions every day...saving lives, property and the environment. Coast Guard personnel receive a big serving of personal and career fulfillment as they learn a lot, experience even more, and serve a valuable role in communities around the country.

It is amazing what the Coast Guard does day in and day out.

In an average day, the Coast Guard...
* Saved 15 lives * Conducted 144 search and rescue cases * Responded to 34 oil hazardous chemical spills * Boarded 90 large vessels for port safety checks * Inspected 64 commercial vessels * investigated 17 marine accidents * Seized 318 pounds of marijuana and 253 pounds of cocaine (total street value of $7.7 million) * Serviced 150 aids to navigation * Interdicted 112 illegal aliens. This is an impressive list to be sure, and it is not surprising that the prospect of doing “Jobs That Matter” attracts many prospects to the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard provides training and expects its people to accept responsibility. Few other organizations, military or civilian, delegate as much responsibility and authority as quickly as the Coast Guard. And, unlike the other services, all Coast Guard jobs are open to women.

As the smallest of the five U.S. service academies, the Coast Guard Academy offers the elite higher education, rigorous professional development, and honor and tradition of a military academy but with a more personalized approach.

The Coast Guard Academy offers an integrated life experience which emphasizes academics, physical fitness, character and leadership, in order to graduate officers of the highest caliber. Graduates go directly to positions of leadership in "The Shield of Freedom," one of the most admired organizations in the world. The Academy also features an impressive teacher-student ratio and picturesque waterfront campus which instills a traditional small college feel.

Coast Guard cadets devote themselves to an honor concept and graduate to work at sea, on land, in the air, and even in space, in meaningful careers of selfless service to others. A great number also go on to graduate level study, many at the expense of the Coast Guard. The program is more rigorous than a non-military college - but for the right candidates-- USCGA is the opportunity of a lifetime.
