The 2017 Chicago National College Fair will be held at McCormick Place
Description:

Representatives from approximately 400 two-year and four-year colleges, nursing schools, business schools and trade schools will participate in the Chicago National College Fair which will be held on Saturday, October 14 at McCormick Place.

Officers and enlisted personnel from the various branches of the military services will also be on hand to discuss the military’s enlistment and education programs such as R.O.T.C., the military academies and the GI Bill.

The College Fair, sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) in partnership with Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC), is a timesaving opportunity for students and parents to gather a lot of information in one day. College admissions representatives will be on hand to answer key questions ranging from acceptance policies to student–faculty ratio.

In addition to asking questions, students and parents will be able to set up college interviews, pick up literature and learn about the various financial aid programs available.

Review the list of participating colleges and make a list of the booths you’d like to visit. To make the best use of your time at the Fair you can visit www.gotomyncf.com to register for a personal bar code. When you visit the college booths, the reps will scan your bar code, automatically accessing your information. This will leave you more time to engage in one-on-one conversation. You can also use the computers provided at the convention site, but be aware that lines may be long at the registration tables. Your goal is to have as much time as possible to talk with the reps at their booths.

Fairs are an exciting chance to talk to the people in the know. But it's easy to get caught up in the crowds and confusion. Soon you're criss-crossing the room (or many rooms), stopping at any booth that catches your eye or seems popular. When that happens, you end up with lots of pretty brochures, but not a lot of clear impressions about which colleges you may be interested in. Making the most of a college fair means planning your strategy beforehand.

Treat a college fair like a buffet dinner. There will be more there than you can possibly take in, but then again, not everything is to your taste.

Look over a list of college fair participants before the fair. Choose the colleges in which you are most interested. If you have time, research these colleges by reading information in your guidance office or by checking out guidebooks or Web sites.

Before you leave for the fair, make sure you have the following supplies: a small notebook with your list of colleges and questions you want to ask; a pen or pencil; and a backpack or tote-bag to hold all of the college information you'll be collecting.

Write up a short list of questions to ask admission representatives. To compare several schools, plan on asking the same questions at each table.

Rather than asking questions like, "How many people are in the freshman class?" ask what the two or three most popular majors are (that can give you a good idea of the main interests of the majority of the students). If you have a particular major in mind, don't ask "How good is major X?" No college representative will tell you that a program is bad. Instead, ask how many students take that major; what research faculty members are involved in (and the opportunities for undergraduates to participate in it); or what courses you would take your first year in a particular major. Students who are undecided should ask about what services and support are available to help them explore various majors.

Your notebook and pen are great tools for keeping all those conversations straight. After you leave a table, jot down your impressions of the college and the answers the admission representatives gave you. Try to do this before you visit the next table, while your impressions are still fresh.

Students with access to computers may wish to print up a few sheets of self-stick address labels. At the fair, slap the address labels on the college information cards found in this publication to save you time in filling out the same information over and over at each college's table.

By the time the fair is over, you'll have a bag filled with information about colleges--and a possible case of information overload. Don't succumb to the temptation of just piling all those brochures in some obscure corner of your bedroom. If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a day or two away from the college search. Then get out all of those brochures, along with the notes you took while at the fair, and read through them. Follow up by starting to schedule college visits.

If you think you cannot afford a college education, or afford the college of your choice, you could be very pleasantly surprised. Too many families automatically limit their college selection, or whether or not to even attend college, simply by looking at tuition and room and board costs. Very few families can afford to write checks for these costs without the availability of some type of financial assistance. Contrary to some public opinion, there are many opportunities to get financial assistance, even for upper middle-income families. College selection should not be limited to only the schools a family may mistakenly think they can afford.

Some decisions on college selection are made for very odd reasons. They should not be. Remember, the college in which you decide to enroll should, and will, have a profound impact on the rest of your life.

The National College Fair is not meant to be the last step in your search for the college or university that matches your needs and the characteristics you want in higher education. Rather, it should be one of the first steps in your search process.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) is based in Arlington, VA, it serves high-school guidance counselors and college-admissions officers who assist students with the transition to higher education. Its more than 9,000 members are colleges and universities, high schools, associations and organizations, and individuals whose institutions belong to NACAC.

NACAC establishes and promotes high ethical standards for the counseling professions, answers questions on financial aid, students' rights in the admissions process, ethics and legal decisions affecting admissions and sponsors research pertinent to the counseling profession.
