Work-study helps you pay college expenses

Monday, August 08, 2011
Students who require financial assistance to pay college expenses can earn money and gain professional experience through the Federal Work-Study Program (FWS). If you are eligible to receive financial aid, work-study may be included as part of your financial aid package.

The Federal Work-Study Program allows students to work part-time either on-campus in the school’s offices and facilities or off-campus, usually in community or not-for-profit organizations. According to the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid Web site, these jobs should relate to your course of study whenever possible.

Students who participate in this program receive an hourly wage that is equal to the current federal minimum wage, but may be higher, depending on the school. The maximum amount you can earn each year will appear on the financial aid award letter you receive from the college.

Several factors go into how many hours you will work, such as class schedule, academic progress and the total amount of your FWS award.

If you are interested in participating in the Federal Work-Study Program, you should investigate which colleges and universities offer this opportunity. The U.S. Department of Education's Web site states that approximately 3,400 postsecondary schools provide this form of financial assistance.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800571319-ADNFCR
