What is the real cost of attending college

Monday, July 18, 2011
How much does it cost? This is one of the first questions students and their parents ask about a college. By “cost” they are usually referring to tuition. However, tuition is only one part of the entire cost of college attendance.

When considering the full cost of college, students and their parents need to look at all items that appear on a bill, in addition to those that do not.

According to CollegeBoard.com, a higher education research organization, billable costs encompass tuition per term, as well as a variety of fees including activity fees, technology fees and fees for use of certain facilities. If you live on campus you will incur room and board fees which include the cost of the residence hall and the dining plan.

Costs that do not appear on bills but must be figured into the total cost of attendance include textbooks, a computer and any other materials that are needed for classes; transportation, personal supplies, and spending money.

Tuition and fees will vary depending on the type of school you attend. For instance, public schools tend to be less expensive, as a large portion of their funding comes from the state in which they are located. Private schools, on the other hand, are self-funded, and thus, more costly.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800554523-ADNFCR
