Use the College Affordability and Transparency Center to compare college costs

Wednesday, June 13, 2012
If tuition and financial aid play a big part in deciding which colleges and universities you will apply to, then it is very important that you get an accurate idea of the costs at your chosen college over the course of your degree.

The recently updated College Affordability and Transparency Center Web site, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, gives you an accurate look at how much you will pay for an associate’s or bachelor’s degree at private, public or for-profit schools. This online resource, designed to help you make more informed decisions regarding your education, provides prospective college students and their parents with information on which schools have the highest and lowest net prices, as well as the colleges where these rates are rising the fastest.

"We want to arm students and parents with the information they need to make smart educational choices," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a recent press release. "Students need to know up front how much college will actually cost them instead of waiting to find out when the first student loan bill arrives. These lists are a major step forward in unraveling the mystery of higher education pricing."

The College Affordability and Transparency Center allows you to create reports that give you a sense of how much you will pay at the type of school you are interested in attending.

For example, you can select a public college that offers degree programs lasting four years or more, and receive a report on which of these schools have the highest tuition rates. Using combinations of public, private or for-profit schools and four or more years, two or more years or less than two-year programs, you can generate lists of schools with the highest and lowest tuition or net price.

Another feature on the site is the ability to generate a list of colleges that are experiencing the fastest increases in tuition and other fees. According to the Web site, the average cost of attending a public, four-year college is up by 15 percent, while students are paying an average of 16.6 percent more to attend public, two-year colleges.

The College Affordability and Transparency Center provides access to information on 4,165 colleges and universities. During your search for a college, an online resource like this can prove very useful in helping you and your parents decide which schools warrant further investigation, and which you can cross off your list of potential colleges.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800795893-ADNFCR
