The most popular college majors

Wednesday, November 02, 2011
If you are having trouble selecting your college major, it may help to know what subjects other students find interesting.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), business was the most popular college major among undergraduate students during the 2008-2009 school year, with a total of 348,000 students pursuing a bachelor's degree in the subject during this time.

Second, in terms of popularity, were degrees in the social sciences and history, which 169,000 students were pursuing, according to the NCES Web site. These fields were followed by health professions and related clinical sciences and communications.

Rounding out the top 10 college majors were subjects in the fields of communications, biological and biomedical sciences, computer and information sciences, engineering, psychology and the visual and performing arts.

While it can be helpful knowing which subjects other students find appealing, you should put your own interests and career goals first when selecting a major.

For example, if you are good with numbers, are detail oriented, and communicate well with others, CollegeBoard.com, a higher education research organization, suggests accounting as a major. Student who would like to major in history should be creative, open-minded, and have excellent writing skills, while those who lead a healthy lifestyle, have a strong sense of ethics and a desire to help others might want to major in mental or social health services.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800633304-ADNFCR
