Study reveals college majors with the best return on investment

Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Even with financial aid, a college education comes with a high price tag. To determine if the initial cost is worth the end result, two economists from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York examined the return on investment (ROI) of various degrees and college majors.

The study "Do the Benefits of College Still Outweigh the Costs?" found that there is still an economic benefit to earning a degree, even with tuition costs rising. Research showed that individuals who earned a bachelor's or associate's degree had an average return on investment of 15 percent per year. With the typical mark of a sound investment sitting at a 7 percent ROI, the economists deduced that enrolling in college is still a wise choice, particularly because from 2001 to 2013, people with bachelor's degrees had wages about 75 percent more than those with only high school diplomas.

Not all degrees posted the same ROI, however. Engineering degrees were found to be the most beneficial, with graduates enjoying an average return of about 21 percent. Similar STEM paths such as computer science and math boasted an 18 percent return, tied with health majors and just slightly ahead of business students. - helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
