Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges help military personnel earn a college degree

Wednesday, February 22, 2012
Even if you choose to serve your country by joining the military after high school, you can still earn college credit by taking courses through Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC).

SOC was established in 1972 to help servicemembers on the move complete their college degree. It is funded by the Department of Defense through a contract with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

According to soc.aascu.org, SOC’s Web site, approximately 1,900 accredited colleges and universities are a part of the SOC Consortium. These military-friendly schools provide opportunities for servicemembers to complete an associate, bachelor’s or graduate degree in a way that is compatible with their lifestyle. In addition to attending classes on college campuses or military installations, servicemembers can also utilize distance learning options.

SOC opportunities are available for each branch of the military, except the Air Force. The SOCAD, SOCNAV, SOCMAR and SOCCOAST programs assist members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, respectively. Meanwhile, the SOCGuard program is designed for those serving in the Army National Guard, and ConAP, or the concurrent admissions program, is a partnership between the Army Recruiting Command and SOC for Army enlistees.

By taking advantage of the SOC program, you have the opportunity to take courses related to your college major, no matter where in the world you are stationed.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800713572-ADNFCR
