Wednesday, May 09, 2012
If you have a talent for turning a routine family photo into a work of art, you may want to hone your talent as a photography major in college.

You can pursue a degree in photography at the associate’s or bachelor’s level and at a wide variety of higher education venues including universities, community colleges and technical colleges. Depending on the focus of the program, students in this major generally graduate with either a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of fine arts degree.

As a photography major you will develop your skills by studying the history of this art form and its place in the overall sphere of the visual arts. You may be required to take introductory art courses or a foundation year in which you will work in various art forms. You will learn how to the take and develop photographs while considering design elements such as lighting, color and composition.

Depending on the program, you may work with a digital camera, film camera or both. Concentrations within the major include fashion photography, commercial photography, portrait photography, fine art, or photojournalism.

An undergraduate degree in photography prepares you for a career as a professional photographer. In this role, you may take pictures for a media outlet, direct photo shoots for consumer catalogs or specialize in snapping shots from a plane or helicopter as an aerial photographer. If you are taking pictures as an art form or are interested in teaching at the university level you can pursue a master of fine arts degree.

Many photographers are self-employed, owning and operating their own studios or working on a freelance basis in a wide variety of situations ranging from red-carpet events to family gatherings.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800772180-ADNFCR - helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
