PSAT offers test prep and scholarship opportunity

Tuesday, March 20, 2012
If you are looking for a way to prepare for the SAT and receive help paying for college, then you may want to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

This standardized test, co-sponsored by College Board, a higher education research organization, and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), is designed to prepare students for the SAT. Questions assess your critical reading, writing and math problem-solving skills.

While you may not be looking forward to taking yet another standardized test, the PSAT/NMSQT has its benefits, as it shows how you performed in the same subjects you will encounter on the SAT. This, in turn, will help you to identify the areas you should focus on while preparing for the SAT. At the same time, you get a sense of how you compare to your college-bound peers.

When you take the PSAT/NMSQT, you are also entered into the National Merit Scholarship competition. According to the NMSC Web site, of 1.5 million entrants, about 50,000 students with the highest test scores qualify for National Merit Scholarship Program. These individuals are then narrowed down to approximately 8,300 finalists who go on to compete for National Merit Scholarships of $2,500.

Students typically take the PSAT/NMSQT during their junior year of high school. If you are interested in this opportunity and your high school does not require you to take this assessment, speak to your counselor at the beginning of the school year to register for the test. ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800734034-ADNFCR - helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
