New report outlines best locations for college students

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Location is a major consideration when students are looking for a college. To aid in the college search, students may want to refer to a recently published report from the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) which outlines the best towns and cities in the U.S. for college students.

In its College Destinations Index, the AIER identified prime locations for college students. A range of factors were assessed, including the economic and academic strength of urban areas, as well as the overall quality of life and job opportunities for recent graduates.

Based on the data collected by the AIER, New York City ranked first in the major metropolitan area category, followed by Boston, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Minneapolis/St. Paul. Overall, the best college towns were Ithaca, NY; Ames, Iowa; State College, Penn.; Crestview, Fla.; and Iowa City, Iowa.

"In today's economic climate, simply attending a great university isn't enough," said Steven Cunningham, chief economist at AIER. "The city or town the university is located in can have as much an effect on a student's experience and future prospects. With the economic recovery taking root, more businesses are opening throughout places we studied and that leads to greater opportunity for students, both now and in the future."
