Moving into the dorms as a freshman

Friday, August 30, 2013

Moving into a college dormitory is an essential part of student life for millions of young people. As the fall semester approaches, students who are preparing for college may want to follow these tips to ensure that move-in day goes as smoothly as possible.

Don't overlook the importance of bringing a small tool kit to school. Assembling flat-pack furniture is a lot easier with simple tools like an Allen key and a rubber mallet. Getting settled is stressful enough without having to borrow precious tools from better-prepared students. Similarly, a small hand-truck can be invaluable on move-in day as cars are rarely allowed to park anywhere near college dorms, and who wants to carry heavy boxes across campus?

Before move-in day you should find out whether your college provides volunteers to help freshmen settle in. Many schools recruit teams of returning students to help you unload your car and transport boxes right to your door. Be sure to research how to take advantage of this assistance before you arrive on campus.

Regardless of whether you are getting extra help or moving everything yourself, be sure to label all your boxes, bags and suitcases with your name and dorm room. In all the confusion it is not unusual for something to go missing.

Moving into the dorms can be one of the most exciting parts of college, and with a little forethought and preparation, it doesn't have to be an ordeal. - helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
