More men seeking nursing degrees

Thursday, March 07, 2013

Students who major in nursing are preparing themselves for work in a field that is thriving in the current economy. Traditionally, the role of registered nurse (RN) has been filled by women. However, this should not deter men from pursuing an undergraduate degree in nursing. In fact, the number of men working as RNs has risen considerably over the past few decades.

Based on the findings of a recent U.S. Census Bureau study, the number of male RNs increased from 2.7 to 9.6 percent between 1970 and 2011. In 2011, about 330,000 of the 3.5 million RNs working in the U.S. were male.

The increase in men entering the nursing profession is due in part to the projected nursing shortage in this the country. According to the study, schools are actively pursuing male students to fill seats in their nursing programs.

Individuals with an undergraduate degree in nursing may be well-positioned to find work in the health care industry, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job opportunities for RNs to increase by 26 percent through 2020.

In addition to the increase of men as registered nurses, the fields of licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses also saw in a rise in male employment between 1970 and 2011, from 3.9 to 8.1 percent. - helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
