More colleges offering video game design as a major

Tuesday, September 02, 2014

As video games and electronic sports grow in popularity, so too do the job opportunities in this field. According to The New York Times, the gaming industry is one of the most lucrative in entertainment. It closely follows the movie business and pulls in $20 billion more than the music industry. For these reasons and more, many colleges and universities have added video game design to their list of available majors.

A booming industry
The news source noted that gaming is a worldwide phenomenon that continues to grow. For example, last year, a total of 8.5 million viewers logged in to watch a League of Legends tournament that was streamed lived. To put this in perspective, that's the same audience numbers for the Stanley Cup finals earlier that same year.

"This stuff is expanding out of control. We have no idea what the limits are," James Lampkin, a product manager for the Electronic Sports League (ESL), told The New York Times.

This year, the ESL hosted a game in Portland that attracted 73,000 in-person attendees. With the number of video game enthusiasts growing at such a fast rate, the need for new and improved games is now greater than ever.

Growing opportunities
Colleges that have recognized the need for these designers have created unique programs that combine elements of design, coding and sports management. According to CNN, game designers need to be proficient in the technical skills required to create a game without bugs, design best practices to make a visually interesting form of entertainment, and develop storytelling skills that keep a gamer stimulated and engaged.

CNN reported that there are currently more than 500,000 video game designer jobs, and the market is expected to increase by 27.6 percent in the next 10 years. While there's typically a lot of competition in creative fields of this nature, the outlook is positive and designers can expect to make up to $117,000 at the peak of their career. This optimistic future should be encouraging for students who have a goal of turning their passion for video games into a career that could entertain like-minded people. - helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
