Military experience can translate to college credit

Tuesday, December 13, 2011
After graduating from high school, you may decide to postpone enrolling in college and instead enlist in the military. One of the benefits of this decision is the time you spend serving your country can often shorten the time it takes to earn a college degree.

Some colleges and universities provide college credit for the experience soldiers gain during their service, according to Military.com. This, in turn, can reduce the number of classes you are required to take and lower your college costs.

While you will not be taking classes in literature or math when you enter the military, you will still be learning. The transition from civilian to soldier requires that you participate in basic combat training for 10 weeks, according to GoArmy.com. During this time, you will acquire weapon and engagement skills, while also learning about the Seven Army Core Values before moving on to advanced individual training.

Through the American Council on Education’s (ACE) military programs, the experience you gain in the armed forces can translate to college credits. More than 2,300 colleges and universities recognize ACE-endorsed transcripts as official documentation of military experiences and accurate records of applicable credit. During your post-military search for colleges, be sure to speak with admissions officers, academic advisors, registrars, career counselors or U.S. Department of Defense Voluntary Education professionals who are versed in recognizing educational experiences that were gained in the military.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800662710-ADNFCR
