Military colleges offer unique educational and leadership opportunities

Monday, November 21, 2011
Students who are interested in participating in a military program while getting a college education should consider a military college. However, as with any college search, students must decide what type of military college will best match their educational and personal needs.

For example, in a two-year military junior college, students, or cadets as they are known in these schools, can receive the training they need to become commissioned officers through the Early Commissioning Program, according to the Web site However, before cadets can serve as active-duty officers, they must earn a bachelor's degree. There are currently five military junior colleges in the United States.

According to the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS), two-year schools prepare cadets for the rigors of four-year colleges and universities, while providing the academic training applicable to a number of professional careers. Cadets who attended a military preparatory school will find that the two-year colleges build off what they learned in high school, according to AMCSUS.

While students who enroll in senior military colleges wear their uniforms to class and are required to participate in physical training, their academic experience is much like that offered at traditional colleges and universities, AMCSUS states. Some schools provide a traditional liberal arts education, while others offer college majors such as government service and maritime history.

Senior military colleges also offer Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs in the different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces – the Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy. According to, there are six senior military colleges in the country, some of which are part of larger universities.

Ultimately, enrolling in a military college of any type can help students gain experience and develop skills they might not acquire elsewhere. For example, AMCSUS states that cadets can benefit from the core values that embody the military school tradition, including service, honor, integrity and self-discipline. Additionally, cadets can grow academically and personally due to the school’s structured environment and high level of expectation. Furthermore, the education offered by these colleges can build character and help individuals develop leadership abilities.

In addition to pursuing careers in the military, AMCSUS states that graduates of these schools go on to fill leadership roles in a variety of sectors, including, but not limited to, business, education, health care, science and government.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800647070-ADNFCR - helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
