Members of the military to benefit from new social network

Tuesday, November 13, 2012
Students who decide to enlist in the armed forces upon graduating from high school will provide an incomparable service to their country while developing a diverse set of highly sought after skills. A new social media platform has been designed to help service members optimize the skills and training they received while on active duty and then transition to a successful career in the military or the private sector.

Identifying opportunities
According to The Washington Post, the new Web site, known as RallyPoint, aims to help active-duty members of the military connect with one another and identify strategic assignments within the armed forces. An added feature is designed  to connect  transitioning service personnel with potential civilian employers.

The service could be of particular benefit to younger veterans, as a recent study published by the Center for a New American Security, a nonpartisan military think tank based in Washington, D.C., suggests that unemployment among veterans between the ages of 22 and 24 is 3 percent higher, on average, than non-veterans in the same age range.

According to the official RallyPoint Web site, members create a personal profile complete with their military experience and training. RallyPoint translates that military experience into a résumé for civilian employers and connects service personnel with interested employers months before the actual transition date.

Looking to the future
While the Web site may be in its early days, it has the potential to enable active members of the military to not only connect with one another, but also to identify fast-growing employment areas in the civilian sector. This, in turn, may make it easier for military personnel preparing for college to plan their education while still on active duty.

Armed forces career Web site Military.com suggests that service members plan their civilian career, and necessary education, in advance to maximize opportunities available to them and ensure they are on the right track to meet their goals. Fields such as computer engineering, health care, education and human resource management are all considered to be growing areas of employment for military personnel. Identifying opportunities within these sectors using services such as RallyPoint may make it easier for service personnel to prepare for college and choose a degree program with solid employment prospects.

In addition to using Web sites such as RallyPoint, individuals in the military who are considering their next move may also want to research initiatives such as the DANTES Credit-by-Examination program to see whether the skills they gained during their military service can be applied toward course credit at their prospective colleges and universities.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800905104-ADNFCR
