Liberal arts colleges provide a broad educational experience

Tuesday, November 29, 2011
Just because you have yet to choose a college major does not mean that you are not ready for higher education. In fact, many students in this predicament choose to apply to a liberal arts college, where they will have the ability to explore multiple academic subjects.

Students who have a broad range of interests should take a look at liberal arts schools when conducting their college search. According to CollegeBoard.com, a higher education research organization, these schools tend to offer four-year bachelor’s degree programs in subjects such as English, history, philosophy and mathematics.

Many liberal arts colleges are private schools which tend to have smaller classes, as opposed to the large lecture hall settings typical of large public universities. As a result, it is not uncommon for students in liberal arts colleges to form stronger relationships with their classmates and professors in these more intimate environments.

In a liberal arts college, there is also no need for alarm if students have not chosen their college majors one – or even two – years into their schooling. In fact, College Board states that students typically take a range and variety of courses during their freshman and sophomore years before selecting their major.

When searching for a liberal arts college, students need to find a school where they feel they will fit in and thrive, both academically and personally. Students will find that a number of these schools are quite unique. Some may be single-sex or religious, while others offer non-traditional curricula.

While some students may prefer to focus on one subject throughout college, a broader educational experience can be just as beneficial to graduates who are entering the workforce.

Laura Morsch, writing for CareerBuilder.com, states that graduates of liberal arts programs possess the writing and communication skills that can prove helpful in most careers. Whereas an individual who majored in one specific field may have a limited career path, those who have a broader background might face more job prospects and increased flexibility.

Liberal arts degrees alone can serve as launch pads to a diverse range of careers. For example, College Board suggests that students who pursue a degree in anthropology can go on to become museum curators or archaeologists, while history and English students may find careers as educators.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800652097-ADNFCR
