Do you want to stay in-state or go out-of-state?

Tuesday, July 19, 2011
Students who are in the early stages of the college planning process need to consider how far from home they are willing to go. Although you may not realize it, if you are looking at public, state-supported schools, location can play an important role in how much tuition you will pay.

Attending a public out-of-state college or university typically translates to higher tuition than if you attend an in-state public college. However, if a school is a good fit and your family can afford it, then this educational investment may be well worth it.

In a recent Fox Business article, Bob Sweeney, a guidance counselor at Mamaroneck High School in New York “encourages students and families to be comparative shoppers.” They need to compare factors such as the amount of merit and financial aid the student will receive and the availability of their program of interest at schools in the student’s home state.

For students whose decision will ultimately hinge on college tuition costs, FinAid.org, a financial aid resource Web site, explains that those who reside in the same state in which they wish to attend school are often eligible for lower in-state tuition rates as well as education grants.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800555645-ADNFCR
