College scholarships for women of all ages

Wednesday, March 14, 2012
One of the simple truths about college is that it is expensive. However, securing a scholarship can make paying for college more affordable. College-bound females of all ages can conduct an online college scholarship search and find a number of awards to help women in the pursuit of a degree.

In addition to being gender specific, scholarships for woman may also address certain career paths, ethnic backgrounds, age, or economic or social situation. Before applying for a scholarship make sure you meet the eligibility requirements.

If you are interested in pursuing a college major related to engineering, engineering technology or computer science, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) may be able to make your education more affordable. Each year, the SWE awards scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 to undergraduate and graduate students, according to the society’s Web site. In 2011 alone, 188 new and renewed awards worth a total of $540,000 were disbursed.

Zonta International, a global organization dedicated to advancing women’s status around the world, offers the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship. Female students who plan to pursue an undergraduate degree in business can receive $1,000 in financial assistance. Since 1998, Zonta has helped 275 students worldwide.

A number of the scholarships that are awarded to women on an annual basis are designated for older students who had to delay their higher education goals for one reason or another.

For instance, the Jeannette Rankin Foundation established the Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund for low-income female students who are 35 years of age or older. Women who want to attend a vocational school or work towards an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, must meet income requirements and provide an explanation of their academic and professional goals, states the foundation’s Web site.

Since 1997, women’s retailer Talbots has also provided financial assistance to individuals who have the desire to return to school later in life. Through the years, the Talbots Charitable Foundation has disbursed more than $1 million in awards. In 2012, a total of 17 students will be awarded  $10,000 scholarships, according to the retailer’s Web site. In addition, one individual with an entrepreneurial spirit will receive $30,000 through the Nancy Talbot Scholarship Award.

Whether you are a high school student about to enter the next phase of your life or a woman who has not set foot inside a school in many years, consider starting your scholarship search today.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800730067-ADNFCR
