College readiness programs can create well-rounded students

Wednesday, June 15, 2011
After a school year's worth of new math formulas, grammar and scientific methods, many high school students view their summer vacation as a time to stop learning and start having fun. However, individuals with clearly defined academic goals may want to use this free time to enhance and expand their existing knowledge.

Many summer programs exist that not only can provide students with college preparation, but also expose them to skills and subjects that they might not learn at their high school. Programs like Upward Bound provide students with tutoring, counseling, mentoring, and cultural enrichment. At Hibbing Community College (HCC) in Minnesota program participants had a chance to learn about Hindu culture, Northland's Newscenter reports.

In addition to exploring Eastern customs, the students at HCC received a hands-on lesson in the art of henna-tattooing. Not only are these activities fun, but they can help individuals become more well-rounded as they prepare to join students from around the world at their chosen college or university.

Upward Bound is a free, federally funded program designed to provide college readiness skills to low-income students or those who are the first in their family to pursue higher education. Participants gain motivation, self-confidence and academic skills.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800530699-ADNFCR
