Accounting majors do more than just crunch numbers?

Wednesday, May 30, 2012
If you are good with numbers and wish to apply your analytical skills to problem solving, then accounting may be the right college major for you.??

While your idea of an accountant may be that of someone who spends all of his or her time tallying long columns of numbers, accountants actually perform a variety of activities, from helping organizations run more efficiently to preparing and filing taxes for individuals to investigating organizations suspected of fraud.??

Many colleges and universities offer programs in accounting. Most schools allow undergraduate business students to specialize in accounting. Some schools, however, offer accounting or auditing as a stand-alone program.??

Regardless of the way your program is designed, to prepare for a career in accounting you will take courses in auditing, federal taxation, accounting information systems, financial reporting and ethics. Many accountants choose to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), a credential that enhances their marketability and is necessary if they are filing reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Uniform CPA Examination is  one of the "Three Es," along with education and experience that the American Institute of CPAs states is required for licensure as a CPA.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics as an accountant you can pursue opportunities within the business, financial, manufacturing and government sectors. Before or after you begin your career, you can also continue your studies in graduate school by enrolling in a Master of Accountancy program. ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800786262-ADNFCR - helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
